Soaring Fatal Accidents in Mainz 2025: A 144% surge report - Police to Enhance Safety Measures for the Elderly Population
In an effort to address the increasing number of traffic accidents, the Mainz police have announced their participation in the European RoadPOL Safety Days (RSD), an initiative aimed at reducing traffic fatalities on European roads. The RSD will take place from September 16 to 22, 2025, and will see various events and advisory services being offered across Rhineland-Palatinate.
Last year, Rhineland-Palatinate saw a significant increase in traffic accidents, with 25 fatalities in 2024 compared to 11 in 2023. The police's traffic accident report does not specify where the accidents occurred, but the overall accident report for the region showed an increase in accidents in urban areas.
To combat this trend, the Mainz police have decided to focus their efforts on improving road safety among seniors. In the city of Mainz alone, there have been 22 fatal traffic accidents in the area of the Mainz police headquarters in the first half of 2025, a 144% increase compared to the same period in 2024. Among the victims in these 22 fatal accidents, 19 were seniors, with 15 of them losing their lives.
To address this issue, the Mainz police headquarters will focus on raising awareness of road safety among seniors during the RSD in 2025. They will provide advisory services in pedestrian zones specifically for seniors on September 19, 2025, at Mainz-Bretzenheim at Dahlheimer Weg. Information tables on senior safety will also be available at the senior safety day of the Verbandsgemeinden in Eisenberg on September 17, 2025.
Targeted checks will focus on the roadworthiness of bicycles, e-scooters, and pedelecs during the RSD. On September 18, 2025, there will be an advisory service on e-scooters and pedelecs, focusing on roadworthiness, traffic suitability, and illegal tuning, in Bad Kreuznach. Inspection of the roadworthiness of bicycles for children and seniors will also be available at several schools in Bad Kreuznach on September 18, 2025.
The venues for the RSD 2025 in Rheinhessen are the Verkehrsübungsplatz Hahn and the ADAC Fahrsicherheitszentrum Mainz. Advisory services will be available at these venues, as well as at various locations across the region. For instance, on September 17, 2025, advisory services will be available in Worms, shopping park and pedestrian zone, and at the Ingelheim weekly market. Advisory services will also be available at the Rheinhessencenter in Alzey on September 19, 2025, and at the EWR Arena parking lot, Alzeyer Str. 131, in Worms on September 22, 2025.
Additionally, advisory services will be available at the Kirchheimbolanden shopping center "Mühlstraße" on September 18, 2025. The RoadPOL Safety Days will offer prevention work on senior safety at the Alzey, Karl-Heinz-Kipp-Straße roundabout on September 16, 2025.
The European RoadPOL Safety Days aim to reduce the number of traffic fatalities on Europe's roads to zero for at least one day a year. The Mainz police are hopeful that their participation in the RSD will contribute to this goal and make the roads safer for all users.
