Southern Haven of Shelling Pristinely Elected Among Top Coastal Retreats

Hittin' the Coast:

Stepping foot on Sanibel Island, a gem of a Florida barrier island celebrated for its spectacular beaches, charming weather, and plentiful seashells, lands it a well-deserved spot on our list of Top 50 Beach Towns 2025.

Bounded by the calming Gulf on one side and the tranquil San Carlos Bay on the other, this sliver of tropical heaven provides a whopping 17,000 acres of picturesque landscapes surrounded by golden sands. Despite being nestled near a few major metropolises, it manages to maintain a laid-back vibe, far from the fast-paced city life. Once you've crossed the Sanibel Causeway bridge from Fort Myers, the world seems to melt away, leaving behind nothing but peace and tranquility.

Sanibel Island stands out in more ways than one, largely due to its extraordinary orientation, which played a significant role in shaping its reputation as one of the world's best shelling beaches. Most barrier islands stretch north-south, but Sanibel's east-west alignment allows the currents to carry seashells ashore.

For beachgoers eager for a touch of adventure alongside their sunbathing and surfing, Sanibel is the perfect destination. Jordan Falker, Associate Director of Education at Sanibel Island's prestigious Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium, shares that an impressive array of 350 species of mollusk calls the beaches home, ranging from minute micromollusks to the massive Horse Conch, the largest shelled gastropod in the Gulf and Atlantic. While Lion's Paws, Scotch Bonnets, and the elusive Junonia are the collectors' dream finds, Falker suggests keeping an eye out for the Banded Tulip, Lettered Olive, Atlantic Calico Scallop, Lightning Whelk, Pear Whelk, Atlantic Giant Cockle, and West Indies Fighting Conch.

Peak shelling times, as a rule of thumb, occur an hour before low tide and an hour afterwards, as these hours often find the beach at its most exposed. Falker also notes that winter and spring winds help keep the shells along the shore, with winter and early spring being ideal times to venture out and collect your loot.

Beach town haven, Sheller's Paradise, crowns South's top vacation spots list.

"Winds from the west and northwest help transport shells onto Sanibel's beach," Falker explains. "Winter and early spring are usually prime times for shelling, as winds from those directions occur more frequently, and the lowest tides of the year take place during this season. However, these are just general guidelines!"

To delve deeper into these little treasures and the story behind this unique spot, visit the Bailey-Matthews National Shell Museum & Aquarium. This globally acclaimed establishment is a treasure trove of knowledge and displays, devoted entirely to seashells and living mollusks.
