Start Your Home Vegetable Garden Now: Tips for Cool & Warm Season Crops

Spring is here, and it's time to start your home vegetable garden. Whether you're a seasoned grower or a beginner, you can cultivate a variety of crops in containers as shallow as 12-14 inches. It's a fun and cost-effective family project that yields fresh produce for your meals.

March is the month to plant cool-season seeds like carrots, kohlrabi, lettuce, onion, green peas, radish, spinach, turnips, and corn (late March). Almost any container with drainage holes can be used, making gardening accessible and convenient.

For warm-season crops, wait until April to sow lima beans, green beans, cucumber, okra, summer squash, and watermelon. Some plants, like potatoes (from April), tomatoes, peppers, aubergines (late February indoors), salad, and cabbage plants (April outdoors), can be started indoors in small containers and later transplanted to your garden. Pre-grown early spring bulb flowers like daffodils and tulips can also be potted and moved outdoors when temperatures allow.

To get a head start, start seedlings indoors 6-8 weeks before planting. Use peat pots and potting soil, and after sprouting, place them in a sunny window, keeping the soil moist until ready for transplanting.

Growing vegetables at home offers a wide range of benefits. It's an engaging family activity, it saves money on grocery bills, and it provides fresh, homegrown produce for your meals. From spaghetti sauces to pizza toppings or healthy side dishes, your homegrown vegetables can add variety and nutrition to your diet. So, grab some containers and start sowing – it's time to enjoy the fruits of your labour!
