2025 Texas Sales Tax Holiday for Back-to-School Shopping
Get ready for some tax-free shopping as Texas announces its annual sales tax holiday for back-to-school essentials. From August 8 to 10, you can save on clothing, footwear, school supplies, backpacks, and more, priced under $100.
During this holiday, qualifying items such as shirts, skirts, coats, dresses, shorts, pants, jeans, hats, sneakers, socks, binders, blackboard chalk, calculators, cellophane tape, compasses, composition books, crayons, erasers, folders, glue, notebooks, paper, lunch boxes, backpacks, and book bags will be exempt from sales tax.
Backpacks with wheels that can be worn as traditional backpacks, messenger bags, and up to 10 backpacks can be bought tax-free at once without an exemption certificate. However, certain items like textbooks, software, jewelry, watches, hair accessories, handbags, purses, luggage, umbrellas, athletic gear, non-prescription sunglasses, and electronic devices are not tax-exempt.
The $100 limit includes deliveries, shipping, handling, and transportation charges. For business account purchases, a correctly completed Form 01-339 is required. Diapers are exempt for parents who will be putting children in child care and early childhood programs.
Cloth and disposable fabric face masks are also exempt during this holiday. If a kit contains a mix of taxable and exempt school supplies, the exemption applies to the exempt items, regardless of their quantity.
The exemption applies to purchases from Texas retailers in-store or via online and catalog sales shipping to Texas. Remember, the exemption only applies to purchases made between 12:01 a.m. Friday and midnight Sunday. Refunds for taxes paid outside this period are not available.
