In the heart of carnival season, Mainz, one of Germany's most significant carnival hotspots, is set to experience some changes in its annual Rose Monday parade. Next year's Rose Monday, falling on February 16, will witness a shorter parade due to organisational challenges and rising costs. The Mainz Carneval Verein (MCV), the organising body, aims to focus on Mainzer Garden and clubs whose purpose is steeped in the carnival tradition. As a result, around ten clubs, including The Mainz Winemakers, AquaNautic Boat School Mainz, and the Radverein Rüsselsheim, have been informed they cannot participate anymore, although specific club names are not publicly listed. The parade, known for attracting around 500,000 to 600,000 visitors each year, will also see a reduction in the number of floats per club. This reduction in the number of parade units is necessary due to logistical constraints, as the assembly area around Boppstraße in the Neustadt is becoming increasingly crowded. All external participants, including these non-participating clubs, will be required to purchase a "parade badge" for six euros per person. Additionally, a participation fee of 1,900 euros will apply for external carnival floats. Safety concerns have also prompted changes. Many floats in the parade are unlit, posing a risk in the dark. To address this, the MCV will be implementing measures to ensure all floats are adequately lit. The financing of the Rose Monday parade is another area under review. The MCV aims to "put it on a broader basis," but further details are yet to be announced. Despite these changes, the Rose Monday parade in Mainz remains a spectacle not to be missed. Spanning about seven hours and ending around 6 p.m., the parade will continue to be a highlight of Mainz's carnival season. With the sun setting around 5:45 p.m. on that day, visitors can expect a colourful and vibrant display under the setting sun. Mainz, Cologne, and Düsseldorf continue to be Germany's most important carnival hotspots, offering a unique blend of tradition, culture, and celebration. The Rose Monday parade in Mainz is a testament to this, and its changes for 2023 are sure to keep the spirit of carnival alive.
