If you live where there is a long growing season, you can directly sow the dahlia seeds into the soil after it has warmed to 65-70°F (18-21°C). For those starting with seedlings, transplanting follows a straightforward process. Dig a hole an inch deeper than the rootball, insert the plant, fill in with soil to ground level, and water well.
Fertilizing dahlias is crucial for their growth. Start fertilizing three weeks after planting, and subsequently every four weeks during the growing season. Use a low nitrogen fertilizer like Age Old Organics Age Old Bloom 5-10-5 for optimal results. In container gardening, fertilize dahlias every three weeks.
Watering is essential, especially during high summer. Dahlias require frequent watering to maintain their lush growth. To conserve moisture and reduce weeds, apply mulch around newly planted dahlias.
Transplanting dahlias from pots follows the same procedure as planting seedlings. However, it's best to harden off the seedlings for a week to 10 days before planting by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions. This helps reduce transplant shock.
Dahlias transplanted outdoors should be done when the danger of frost is past. Space plants 30–45 cm (12–18 inches) apart in rich, well-draining soil with full sun exposure.
Regularly deadheading dahlias will prolong the flowering season. Protect your dahlias from slugs and snails by removing pests early each morning and using organic solutions like beer traps.
