Wendover Studio Transforms St John's Wood Police Station into Boutique Rental Apartments

In the heart of London's leafy St John's Wood, a former Victorian fire station has been metamorphosed into nine stylish rental apartments, marking Wendover Studio's debut in the rental sector.

Located at 20 Newcourt Street, the apartments offer a blend of historical charm and contemporary elegance. The building's original structure, with its red brick facade, has been preserved and enhanced, while the interiors exude warmth and minimalism.

The apartments, which range from one- to three-bedroom units, have been designed with a focus on quality, light, and spatial quality. Each apartment boasts a distinct layout, with solid oak flooring, off-white lacquered joinery, and terrazzo worktops in the kitchens. The bathrooms feature an Edwardian-style design, with Edwardian-style taps, basins, ribbed glass, glazed off-white tiles with black-edged detailing.

The apartments are arranged around a central cobblestone courtyard, fostering a sense of community while maintaining privacy. External amenities include an elegantly landscaped garden, a bike park, and a pavilion designed for resident activities such as yoga or private events.

Wendover Studio's approach to the project emphasizes thoughtful design over uniformity, creating a warm, considered living environment. The project reflects Wendover's goal to offer high-quality rental homes in one of London's most desirable neighbourhoods.

The development, a subsidiary of Wendover Partners, was carried out by Wendover Studio. Turley served as the planning and heritage advisor for the project, ensuring its historical integrity was preserved while adapting it for modern living.

Gabriel Chipperfield, co-founder of Wendover, expressed his delight at choosing St John's Wood as the location for the project due to its leafy nature and excellent access across London.

The exterior of the project retains and restores the original masonry, while the courtyard serves as a visual anchor and social meeting point. It includes cycle storage, a shared library, and a co-working space. Morgan Rae was the contractor for the project, and Wendover's re-planning works around the original structure's limitations to bring in daylight and improve spatial flow.

In summary, Wendover Studio's St John's Wood rental apartments offer a unique blend of historical charm and contemporary living, prioritizing quality, light, and meaningful communal spaces.
