United Kingdom's Manchester city to assume the role of a major hub for heat pumps, solidifying this position through a significant five-year accord.
Greater Manchester, a city-region in the North West of England, has taken a significant step towards its carbon neutrality goal by partnering with global heating and cooling solutions provider, Daikin. The five-year agreement, signed in Osaka during the World Expo, aims to rapidly scale up the adoption of heat pumps across Greater Manchester, making it the UK’s "heat pump capital."
Under the terms of the agreement, Daikin will establish a new training center in Trafford Park, which will triple its installer training capacity, training 4,200 people a year. This initiative is a crucial part of Greater Manchester's mission to become carbon neutral by 2038, with the goal of installing 64,000 low-carbon heat pump systems by 2030[1][3][5].
The partnership encompasses various initiatives designed to facilitate heat pump adoption across the city-region. These include a retrofit framework for social housing, the Warmer Homes Grant for private landlords and homeowners, a first-of-a-kind heat pump leasing offer, and ongoing efforts to raise awareness and provide training and support for installations[1]. The agreement also includes utilizing national schemes such as the Boiler Upgrade Scheme (BUS) to provide financial incentives locally[5].
Daikin UK Managing Director, Tomoji Miki, emphasized the partnership's focus on making real change in real homes for real people. He stated, "We are committed to working closely with Greater Manchester Combined Authority to deliver practical solutions that will make a difference in people's lives."
In addition to the training center, Daikin will chair Greater Manchester’s Low Carbon Heating Industry Advisory Group, fostering stronger collaboration between businesses and policymakers to accelerate decarbonization and boost the green economy in the region[5].
Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham expressed his support for the partnership, stating, "This is the kind of partnership we need to make low-carbon heating the norm." He further added, "By working together, we can ensure that cleaner heating becomes a reality for thousands of homes in our city-region."
The partnership also includes community awareness sessions, technical support, and dedicated installs for homelessness projects. Daikin will pilot a leasing model for heat pump installations tailored for Greater Manchester, aiming to help residents avoid large upfront costs.
Greater Manchester is leading by example, putting systems, skills, and support in place to make cleaner heating a reality for thousands of homes. As one of the first UK regions with a clearly defined target for heat pump installations, Greater Manchester is setting the pace for other regions to follow in its footsteps.
