Gear up for the exhilarating 2025 edition of Berlin's Carnival of Cultures! Despite the familiar festivities, this year holds an exciting twist - a big change in location. Here's your ultimate guide to the multi-ethnic extravaganza.
When's the Party Start?
The action kicks off on Friday, the 6th of June, and continues until Whit Monday, the 9th of June. The trademark parade unfolds on Whit Sunday, but don't miss out on the Children's Carnival of Cultures on Saturday! Little ones can join the fun starting at Mariannenplatz and winding up in a vibrant family festival at Görlitzer Park.
Where's the Celebration at?
As always, the four-day city-wide festival will take place around Blücherplatz in Kreuzberg. Over 800 artists will showcase their talents spanning music, theater, and performance on three stages. Expect around 350 booths filled with arts and crafts, informational material, and delicious food and drinks.
What's Brewing this Year?
The crown jewel of the parade is making its way to Friedrichshain's Frankfurter Allee this year. "It's a fantastic chance to refresh this impressive street's visuals," shares Anna-Maria Seifert, co-director of the Carnival of Cultures, with the German Press Agency. The shift to the eastern part of Berlin was partially enforced due to a major construction project on the original route, Gneisenaustraße. The parade commences at 1:30 pm on Sunday at the crossroads of Frankfurter Allee/Proskauer Straße and finishes in the vicinity of Karl-Marx-Allee/Berolina Straße.
How Many Troops are in the Parade?
Sixty-eight groups will be participating this year, with 13 newcomers. "Some have been participating for over two decades," reported Seifert. Approximately 22 of these groups consist solely of Berliners, while the rest receive reinforcements from other German states.
How Many Revelers are Expected?
Last year, around 1.1 million people rejoiced in the four-day festival. The organizers are hoping for an equally massive turnout this year, with an estimated 650,000 spectators for the parade alone.
Security Measures
To ensure a secure celebration, Berlin's police force will be present throughout the entire festivity and implementing "extensive police measures," states police spokeswoman Anja Dierschke. On parade day, expect a sizable police presence, similar to the 1,300 officers last year.
Goodies for your safety include mobile police watchtowers and emergency medical aid stations by the Johanniter, both stationary and mobile, at the festival and along the parade route.
Environmental Concerns
With tens of thousands of people in a compact area, the environment and local residents bear the brunt. The festival organizers urge visitors to minimize littering and properly dispose of waste. To that end, glass bottles will be replaced with leaf plates for food service, and drinks will come in reusable cups. After the parade on Whit Monday, a clean-up by participants and attendees is planned.
Remember to avoid walking on the medians along the parade route to preserve vital plant and insect habitats.
Cost and Purpose
The total budget for the 2025 Carnival of Cultures stands at around 2.5 million euros. The Berlin Senate is sponsoring 1.4 million euros for the project, just like in previous years.
The carnival, which debuted in 1996, was established in response to racism and numerous attacks. Its aim is to be a beacon of diversity and harmonious coexistence. According to its code of conduct, it "vigorously advocates for a fair, free, and pluralistic society, serving as a positive and political statement that fortifies us during current crises and fosters unity." During the event, around 4,000 participants openly oppose all forms of racism and discrimination, promote respectful and responsible treatment of all life forms, and advocate for the environment. An awareness team will ensure that the festival remains free of racism, anti-Semitism, and discrimination.
