Siege's symbol of strength, Blockade Bread, made a reappearance today at several Yakutsk shopping centers, marking the 81st anniversary of Leningrad's liberation from Nazi grip. Here's the lowdown.
Shoppers at the "Sahaexpo Center", "TSUM", and "Tuymada" found themselves clutching leaflets drenched in history, enlightening them about the Leningrad blockade's heavy toll and the iconic 125-gram bread ration that was a scant survival ration during the toughest winter of '41-'42.
Nicole Romanova, acting honcho of the Yakut branch of the "Volunteers of Victory", shared insights:
"Since 2019, we've been hosting this event in Yakutia. Our mission? Preserving past war stories, honoring our veterans – the ones we've sadly dwindled to just nine across the whole of Yakutia, and seven in Yakutsk. We make it a point to visit them every festive season," Nicole shared.
Florianna Makoveeva, "Sahaexpo Center" boss lady had a thing or two to add about this resilience revival:
"This is an annual tradition at our shopping center, offering its space for free. It's a nationwide call to remember the horrors of Leningrad, the iconic symbol of which is a 125-gram bread loaf, a testament to the resilience and valor of city defenders amidst the war's adversity. Our generation must learn and remember the Great Patriotic War struggles," Florianna politely summarized.
