Spotting House Sparrows Around Thuringia: Nature Lovers, Help Count Those Chirpers! 🎵💛😈
Urge from Conservationists: Quantify the Chorus of Chirps! - Whistle Tally Requested!
What's the deal with House Sparrows in Thuringia these days? The Nature Protection Union (Nabu) Thuringia is inquiring just that, seeking answers and insights about the local bird population from their counting events. Starting this Friday, bird enthusiasts are invited to join the "Hour of Garden Birds" until May 11th, observing sparrows in gardens, parks, or even from balconies and windows for an hour at a time.
According to Marcus Orlamünder, Nature Protection Referent at Nabu Thuringia, House Sparrows are usually widespread in Thuringia. However, he notes, "As insectivores, they are heavily influenced by the insect decline. Additionally, they are referred to as building-lovers, making it difficult for them to find suitable nesting opportunities due to renovations and refurbishments." That's why it's exciting to learn more about the bird population in Thuringia.
Participants are encouraged to note the highest number of observed bird species during each one-hour session. The results can be submitted online or using the Nabu's free app. Registration closes on May 19th, 2025.

- Focus: Counting and monitoring bird populations
- Background: With insect populations worldwide on the decline, insights into local bird populations and their food sources have become increasingly important. House Sparrows, along with many other bird species, are heavily reliant on insects as a food source. This decline can significantly impact the overall health and reproductive success of bird populations, including House Sparrows.
- Obstacles: In addition to the insect decline, House Sparrows face obstacles such as inadequate nesting opportunities due to building renovations and the diminishing availability of suitable habitats in urban environments.
- The Nature Protection Union (Nabu) Thuringia, in an effort to combat the decline in insect populations and understand the impact on House Sparrows, is offering a vocational training program on environmental-science and lifestyle changes that can help promote a home-and-garden ecosystem friendly to these birds.
- To further the goal of maintaining a thriving community of House Sparrows in Thuringia, the Nabu Thuringia has incorporated vocational training modules on various aspects of bird-friendly vocational training practices for their members, including conservation strategies, sustainable gardening, and the creation of suitable nesting sites.
