Old faces frequent the kiosk, young ones chase the ball - soon the Wallufer Platz could undergo a radical transformation.
The reimagining of the Wallufer Platz isn't just a distant plan, but an interactive public process. In the first round, the city of Wiesbaden collected over 2,500 suggestions. Now, two concrete visions duke it out in a democratic vote. From June 4 to July 4, locals can vote – online and in-person.
Community Cravings
Today, the Wallufer Platz remains a cornerstone in the lives of many Rheingau dwellers. Families reunite here, children play, and seniors linger. Yet, residents’ ideas reveal a world of untapped potential.
Active engagement for older children and teenagers tops the list. Suggestions range from climbing structures, slides, swings, and even trampolines – all set amidst a natural backdrop. Water features are also popular, serving not only as a refreshing play area but as a sensory element connected to the neighborhood.
Meanwhile, youth voices demand table tennis tables, hammocks, or loungers – spaces to gather and socialize. Rotating elements, allegedly promoting movement and energy, also have youthful appeal.
A Space for All – Flexible, Green, Inviting
Foremost, the neighborhood craves openness and adaptability. Residents call for fewer rigid structures, more diverse spaces – perfect for anything from neighborhood picnics to impromptu concerts or group conversations.
Shade is another recurring theme. Whether through trees, canopies, or textiles, protection from sun and rain is essential for many. In addition, more greenery is desired – not only for aesthetic appeal but also for microclimate benefits.
Rest Points and Conversation Hubs
Long benches with tables lining the square edge, quiet nooks for reading or chatting, seating areas for groups and individuals – many wish for these. Designs should encourage both relaxation and dialogue with strangers.
The Battle of Blueprints
Based on the abundant responses, two planning concepts are now facing a public vote. Both visions prioritize stability, greenery, and adaptability – offering different focuses, such as play area design or materials.
Engage, Vote, and Embrace Change
On June 11 at 2 PM, the plaza itself will become the arena of discourse. Experts from the city, SEG, planning office, and a moderation team will answer questions, clarify details, and hear your thoughts. Simultaneously, the online vote is ongoing at www.wiesbadenwirkt.de/wallufer-platz. Every vote counts!
Politics will follow the public vote - implementation planned for 2026
Following the vote, the outcomes will be incorporated into political consultations. The final vision is planned for implementation by 2026. Mayor Christiane Hinninger urges participation: "The Wallufer Platz isn't merely a stretch of pavement and benches – it's a stage of neighborly interaction. Help us shape it!"
